This visa was introduced by the Portuguese government to attract external resources and investments to boost the country’s economy. As a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, you can start or relocate your business to Portugal or invest in an existing business.
To be eligible, you must meet the financial requirements, including having the recommended amount of €5,000 and enough funds to sustain yourself and your family. You also need to produce a solid business plan that demonstrates your business’s social, economic, and cultural impact on Portugal.
The Portugal D2 Visa offers several benefits, including visa exemption, family reunification, permanent residency, and citizenship after five years of legal residency. Additionally, you can enjoy tax incentives through the Non-Habitual Tax Regime.

Portugal D7 Visa: This visa is for individuals seeking retirement or passive income but is also suitable for remote workers and digital nomads.
In 2007, the Portuguese government introduced the D7 Visa, also referred to as the Retirement Visa or Passive Income Visa. This special residence visa allows non-EU/EEA citizens with a reasonable net regular passive income to apply for residency in Portugal. The passive income can come from various sources such as pensions, real estate, intellectual property, transferable equity, or financial investments. The yearly minimum income required for eligibility is €8,460, with an additional 50 percent of this amount for the spouse and 30 percent for each dependent child, regardless of the country of origin.

The D7 visa allows legal residence for the applicant and their family in Portugal, including the option to have a professional activity. The visa application can be made through the Portuguese consulate by completing a series of residence applications. Once approved, the visa allows for visa-free travel within the Schengen zone and eventual permanent residency and citizenship after five years of legal residency.
As a resident in Portugal, the visa holder and their family are entitled to benefits such as access to the National Health Service Care, National Education Service, and vocational schooling, conducting any professional activity as an independent professional, and protection from the Portuguese Law and Legal System. Family reunification is also possible under the D7 visa.

Portugal D8 Visa: It is specifically designed for Digital Nomads, Freelancers and Remote Workers.
The Portugal D8 visa is a new digital nomad visa that offers two pathways to live and work legally in Portugal as a freelancer or self-employed business owner. The first pathway offers a 1-year temporary stay in Portugal, while the second offers a 4-month visa that you can convert to a 2-year temporary residency permit after arriving in Portugal. The D8 Digital Nomad Visa is anticipated to be the preferred option for remote workers and digital nomads, as it offers more benefits than the D7 Passive Income Visa or D2 Entrepreneur Visa, which many were previously using.
The 1-Year Temporary Stay Digital Nomad Visa offers many benefits, including living and working legally in Portugal as a freelancer or self-employed business owner for up to 1 year, trying out Portugal without having to commit to long-term residency, visa-free travel throughout the Schengen Area, the option to renew for an additional 6 months, and the ability to maintain tax residency in your home country or current tax residency, without the need to open and fund a Portuguese bank account.
The 2-Year Digital Nomad Residency Permit offers even more benefits, such as living and working legally in Portugal as a freelancer or self-employed business owner for up to 2 years, the option to create a Portuguese company or establish your existing business in Portugal, obtaining a Portuguese residency card to replace the 4-month visa in your passport, after converting your visa into a residency permit, enjoying visa-free Schengen Area travel, applying for Non-Habitual Residency (NHR) status to enjoy added tax benefits, the option to renew for an additional 3-year residency permit (for a total of 5 years), qualifying to apply for permanent residency or citizenship in Portugal after 5 years, enjoying Portuguese rights of residency such as education and healthcare, and bringing your family with you under family reunification.
The minimum income requirement for the Portugal Digital Nomad Visa is 4 x the monthly Portuguese minimum wage over the previous 3 months, which comes to a minimum monthly income average of 1014€ per month. However, this is the bare minimum and does not guarantee approval, so it is advisable to prove more than the minimum if possible to help your application’s chances of being approved.

To apply for the Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa, you need to gather your documentation, set an appointment with your assigned consulate or VFS office, submit your application at the appointment, and wait for your decision (up to 90 days depending on which office you submitted your application through). If you are pursuing the longer residency permit, you need to attend your pre-assigned SEF interview in Portugal within 4 months of visa approval and receive your Portuguese Residency Permit Card valid for 2 years.
It is essential to note that requirements may vary depending on which consulate, VFS office, or country from which you are applying. Therefore, it is advisable to reach out to the consulate or VFS office you are applying to in order to find out their specific requirements. Currently, the only consulate in the U.S. processing the new D8 Digital Nomad Visa is the Portuguese consulate in Massachusetts, but as the new visa rolls out, more consulates and VFS offices will begin to process it as well.
